The Sectional Bench is a commissioned design-build project utilizing digital design and fabrication techniques. The design evolved out of the client’s request for a seat with an arched back in order to match a decorative motif in her home. The decorative arching back is complimented by a stabilizing arched base. This conceptual twisting of the inherently stable compressive form of the arch renders it not as vertical structure but as a form providing three support points on a horizontal surface. The arch on the ground is digitally “swept” across the profile of a seat into the arch against the wall, generating the stable and dynamic form for the bench out of a few simple curves. The components for the bench were cut from Baltic birch plywood using a computer-controlled router, and sanded and finished by hand.
