Sudbury Residence

Sudbury, Massachusetts
Completed 2011

This addition to a ranch house frames the suburban landscape from within and the domestic activities of the home from without. The new design features suspended prisms of glass and steel which occupy what was formerly a narrow courtyard between the existing single-story house and detached carport. While the larger volume in the back overlooks the private yard, the smaller volume in front is a bright window seat that provides shelter from the street. These prisms indicate both a visual and physical passageway through the home, preserving the transitional nature of the courtyard through a stepped sequence of thresholds. A fluid progression of spaces transforms the interior of a compressed and subdivided ranch house into an open, airy space bathed in light and hovering above the ground.
